The proportion of Sipp complaints upheld by the Financial Ombudsman Service has fallen to below half in the last quarter – despite a rise in new cases compared to last year.
New figures released this morning showed that for July to September 2015 there were 281 new cases about Sipps accepted by the ombudsman, compared to 210 in the same period last year.
Yet, the number found in favour of the consumer dropped in the last three months to 47%, as against 59% for the same quarter of 2014.
Cases that went to the ombudsman for a decision dropped from July this year as well – falling to 120 from 144.
From April to September this year there were 868 enquiries about Sipps, which led to 545 new cases. Of these, 207 went to the ombudsman, with an uphold rate of 49%.

Overall, personal pensions came outside of the top ten most complained about products from April to September in the latest Financial Ombudsman Service tables.
They were eleventh in the list, with 2,338 enquires received by the FOS from April to September.
These resulted in 751 cases, 149 of which went to the Ombudsman for a decision. The proportion of cases upheld was 26%.
Occupational pension transfers and opt-outs were a long way down the table with 326 enquires received by the FOS, leading to 230 taken on as cases, 79 going to the Ombudsman and 32% were upheld.
